Day 71 – The first time

Two days ago, I took 4 of my regular and one of my new girls to a ‘real gym’, and let them sparre each other (not the new girl). I’ve been super excited for this event, since we started to plan it, but on the other hand, I was also quite nervous.

I known the girls for a long time now. One of them almost a year. So I know they’re tough and often gives everything they got during training – but how they react, when they tried to hit one another? I had no idea.  Well, I did have an idea – cause we’re all girls. And most girls, unlike guys – perceive sparring with a great amount of caution and respect – and a bit hesitation. Where as guys sees sparring as just another very physical state of competing with each other, and often throws down, without any hesitation. Girls seem to take a small step at the time and offering a lot of apologies the first many times they hit someone.

My girls were great! They jumped in, and even they were holding back, you could tell, that they wanted to try it. Yet – ofcourse feeling a little insecure and new at it – but everyone loved it. No one cried, no one got scared. Of course I had 2 first rounds, with limited action: First round f.ex. only punch with left hand, right hand serve as guard.
So I think, it was a good way to introduce them to contact. A bit more controlled, with a keen focus on protection at the same time.

I still remember my first sparring. I finally was allowed to sparre, but got send in, with an experienced girl, who – as far as I recall, just wanted to kill me. lol. And it was all out. Legs and hands – kicks and punches – everything, with the trainer enthusiastic coaching the other girl. I remember, we ‘ran around a lot’ and finally I hit her hard on the nose, and she started crying. And that was it. No more sparring. The trainer never said anything to me. I switched gym shortly after that!

Past three weeks, I’ve 2-3 weight sessions pr. week. (Legs only)
2 Swim sessions pr week (skipped  a week)
2 x FighterGirl classes a week
..And a run today, in the sun!

Reflections

I previous mentioned that Ninna was visiting from Denmark this week. (She just left this morning…. way early!) What I didn’t mention was, that she is a retired fighter with fights in Boxing and thaiboxing – and now is active as a judge and trainer in boxing.
I also didn’t mention, that she came to my FighterGirls classes and took over the teaching process (for about half an hour).

Before she came, ‘d send her my working schedule (which left too little time for us, to hit out on the irish roads and see the country side), and I asked her, if she wanted to come and train with the girls. (I actually offered her to come and train in all my classes/ or gym training, so she wouldn’t get too bored). She said yes to train my girls.

Without realizing it (until now), it was the first test of The FighterGirls Club concept. Since the birth of my ‘FighterGirl baby’ three months ago, the only person who’s been training these girls have been me. The only eyes who spotted errors, mistakes, techniques – was mine. Only voice who asked them to work more and work harder – mine too.

And before even thinking about it, I brought perhaps Denmark’s best female boxing coach to my classes – to see my ‘students’, who are not ‘real’ FighterGirls. (We don’t sparre or have physical contact). Didn’t realize it would open myself and ‘my girls’ up to critique -> but of course it did. Ninna is a strong minded and strong opinionated woman.

So she told me – she actually liked the girls. Could even see potentials in them! I was a very proud ‘mum’ right then and there!

Despite some hard times atm., her remark made my heart warm, and it makes all the effort I put into this worth it. My girls are going to be top class FighterGirls!

Happy Valentines day

I’m still alive and kicking here in Ireland, despite the weather and the public transport system continuously trying to get me down. But I’ve been crazy busy the past few weeks. Since I started working with MiFitness and CIT, I’m often doing classes both morning and evening, and its left me really ‘to tired to blog’ – between everything else that’s going on.

Like this week a friend of mine from Denmark (Ninna) have visited, and it’s been good, but sure a little stressful. For her as well. I love working with MiFitness, they are really great guys (Brenda and Conor), but some days it’s tough, to not work 8 hours straight – but here and there, drizzled all out over the course of a day.

For my training,  a lot of it goes on in the many classes I’ve started to teach: Burn and Tone, 20:20:20, Abs Blast, Circuit and Kettlebells. For The FighterGirls and the new morning boxercise class, I don’t do much: just demonstrating and sorting kick and punches out. (No kicks in Boxercise). MiFitness embraced The FighterGirl concept, which is so cool (I really love them for this!)! The members seem to love it and I really enjoy teaching my kicks and tricks to more corkian ladies.

However due to Irish public transport or lack of the same, I am actually picking up weights again. To be on work on time, I have to get there an hour earlier: So I might as well use the gym.

Wrist, elbow and now finger all are ‘work-able’, which unfortunately doesn’t mean good. So I’m slowly picking up strength again, and trying new stuff, since the gym carries cables, leg press and hamstring curl. Btw. I love the hamstring curl!

I don’t have enough numbers, but will work on getting my blogging on again, and start posting some numbers!

Anyways, Happy Valentines day, pancake day and ash wednesday-day. For me it’s all the same: It’s GYM Day every day!! 😉

New Year, New You – New job

Ok – I’m a little late. We’ve just entered Febuary, none the less we’re still in the beginning of a new year (sort of) and even I’m not the in ‘New You’ category, I did however start a new job.
It’s actually the same as my old job – just better! It turned out Cork had another Womens Only gym – and this time a real gym, with real equipment and really good people – and NO sales schemes. My duties are sort of the same as well: teaching classes, gym inductions and maybe PT’s, so am feeling right at home and happy. Brenda and Conor who runs the gym is on the same page as me, on training, fitness and supplements – and it’s a big relief to be able to focus on training and clients, and not about being stressed about, because I refused to push supplement sale. So the future looks exciting!

Training wise my january haven’t been super busy. I beat my Ross earlier in January (in Austria), and have after return to Ireland taken on 1-10 kicks & 300 knees challenge twice in Brucies Gym. Other than that, a big part of my training have been teaching my 6 new classes at MiFitness. Besides boxercise and The FighterGirls Club, I’m also doing 20:20:20, Circuit, Burn & tone and Abs Blast classes. It’s good with some new challenges and I’ll be picking up Kettlebells again to, so it looks like a strong spring. (Unfortunately I’m a little ‘blow-fishy’ these days, so ain’t got nothing to show for it).

Next few weeks is about building back strength and power to complete a strength seminar and enjoy my new job – and build a bad as* KB class!

Don’t feel like sayin’ much!

Yet, I was thinking, I needed to write a few words. It’s not all gonna be bad, but some is.

First the good stuff. A really cool girl in one of my classes gave me a Christmas present yesterday. It was the last class in Mayfield, and I’m proud to say, Catriona (the class before me) and me pulled the highest numbers for the end of Tuesday classes before Christmas. Back to the gift, it came from Maria, who is also a staff at Mayfield. She’s taken the FighterGirl Boxercise approach to heart, and have been to all the classes she could do, since we started. I feel really blessed, that she liked the classes so much, as she thought of a Christmas present. It touches the heart!

For the bad stuff: I’ve been down and out since last monday, when I hurt my finger. It’s still not good and all my lifting and boxing is bye bye for now. Finger not swollen like a little fat, overcooked irish sausage anymore. (If any of my readers are Irish, and cooked a Clonakilty sausage in the oven – or on pan, and forgot to poke it, you know what I’m talking about). However it’s blue-ish some places and hurt by a slight touch on the top. Chances on I fractured the bone is – let’s just say it as it is: Pretty high!

Result: No training for more than a week. Just being depressed and did my classes. Went for the first run in 2 weeks today. Still not happy, but a run is a run.r

So after my freakin’ elbow incident, wrist injury – now I also got a stupid finger!! While this year in Ireland been great for weightlifting competitions, races and developement of my trainer persona, it’s been shi*!!! for injuries!!

However, I’m not going out on a bad note. Tomorrow is the last day of The FighterGirls Club before Christmas, and I’m looking so much forward for this. I got some small Christmassy stuff and a few surprises up my sleeve. I hope the girls will like the plan and have fun with it. I guess, I’ll be reporting back to the blog afterwards 🙂

Last: I re-discovered a cool little video clip with Saenchai and me. It’s a 1 minute session with the sports best P4p fighter, where I’m getting schooled! Makes me hope I see him again this March (hopefully with Kru Toy).

Got squat ?!?

Something funny happened in the gym (again today). I was up in Mayfield to get a little session of my own, and while I was squatting, a huge guy came up to me and said: ‘It’s good to see women squatting’. I smiled and nodded politely, trying to reply squat is good for everybody, but he cut me off and then proceeded on to say: ‘Don’t ever feel embarrassed or threatened to come to the gym, just because there’s a bunch of guys lifting weights here’ (nodding over to his friends doing bench and flys).

I’m still smiling politely and am about to mutter some reasonable reply – which are stuck, cause I’m not sure what to say. At this point, I’ve been in the gym for about 15 minutes – squatting. He then mumbles something and walks away, take his bag and proceed to the exit. I just got time to squeeze out a little half ‘Thank you’.

I’m actually not sure, why I still find these moments funny – but I do.

It happened before, and it will probably happen again: Guys feeling the need to commentating a female on the free weights. I’m ok with that! Comment at me!

– Getting up there. Funny first two 50 was easy – then I adjusted my stance and it felt crap. Anyway, nice to feel a little strength left, despite so many months since squatting regularly.

-Despite the nice article in The Cork News no new girls showed up because of that, but a few due to word of mouth. I have a feeling it might be the lack of ‘No Contact’ fighter fit training mention in the paper. It does sounds a small bit like it’s a real fighter class. Anyway, am not too bothered. I’m sure the class will take off even more than it has. It’s a great class and my girls love it – and I love getting them fighter fit! (as much as possible with just two days a week.. If it were for real.. I know.. different story!). Anyway, noticed one of my girls have started toning up, others are kicking better, getting stronger and they all doing their push ups without sticking the butt up! So proud!! (big heart inserted here).
Mayfield is busy as usual and girls here also very hardworking and enthusiastic! So thankful to do these two classes.

Fighting talk – proud to fight like a girl

This past week one of the two big free weekly newspapers in Cork, wrote a little article about ‘The FighterGirls Club’ (Article can be found here: Fighting Talk ). Despite the journalist didn’t use the photo of the girls and didn’t mention some of what we talked about (No contact fighter drills f.ex.), I’m really happy about the article. Not because it might help attract new women to the club, but mostly because she put in a few things, that I really believe in:

1) Fighting like a girl is nothing to be shamed of: Girls are tough and strong!

2) Being fit/ training has nothing to do with being a size zero

3) Martial Arts is awesome! (and a great way to get fit, stay fit and develop yourself physically, mentally and spiritually

I hope the words of the article reach girls, teens and women of all ages and sizes, and I hope that despite the medias constant focus on commercialized beauty and skinny models – that the words of the article will hit home: Training is about feeling good in your skin (in and out of your clothes), training is getting to know your body again and find that you are capable!

And of course – get more females into the world which have given me so much: Fight Sport! (Now I could say Muay Thai! But the truth is I love all the fight sports I’ve been involved in – from Taekwondo to MMA. Muay Thai just happens to have the biggest piece of my fightergirl heart)

2x 5 Pull ups (strict – NO kipping)
-Note: I’m taking it slowly on the squats as it’s been probably more than 6-8 months since I’ve done any serious weights. I’m not looking to get back into Powerlifting, just preparing for thaiboxing. Wrist and elbow slowly getting better – hopefully in a week or two it’s all good!
