Does sport makes us better women?

Working with – in – and ‘on’ (my) sport, is very rewarding for me on many levels (otherwise I wouldn’t waste my time on it) and I’m sure it have somehow made me a better person (woman).
I watched the ‘Born for the fight’ videos on You Tube and in the third episode a gym owner explains how Muay Thai made him a better man. It made him want to take in the young poor boys of his village, teach them, train them, put them through school, feed them and give them values and discipline.

It resonated with me, that the sport which have given him so much, made him want to pass it on. As I’ve stated in many posts before, that’s why I like teaching: I want to pass on my joy – I want to ‘give back’.

On a more societal level, I think sport have made me a better woman:
* Having trained for all these years, I’m confident walking home alone at night-time whether in New York or Clonakilty
* I cherish working in a team, even my sport are individual: No one gets strong all alone!
* I’ve also realized, I’m stronger than I think
* I enjoy feeling my body is healthy, strong and capable (of what I might throw at it)
* Even I sometimes feel like crying while at it, I do like the feeling of pushing myself (or being pushed) to perform better and do things, I wasn’t sure I could do

I think being active in sport, does makes us better women (and men), because it teaches us to have confidence in ourselves. To take on challenges. To learn to trust others (our trainers and team mates). And it also allows us (as women) to be aggressive, strong and dominating in a world full of contradictions to what ‘a real woman’ is.

If you’re a female reader of mine – I’d love to hear what sport/ fitness/ fight sport means for you!  (And if you’re a man, I’d like to know likewise. What does sport/ fitness means to you?)

Training update for past week:
Tuesday: Track run (20 min), 2x Boxercise classes ( The FighterGirls Club and Mayfield)
Wednesday: 13K run in the city (including 3 stair case hill sprints. St. Patrick Hill)
Thursday: 3x Boxercise classes (CIT, The FighterGirls Club and Mayfield)
Friday: Core session with Ania in RB Fitness (made me realize, I haven’t been doing strict core in over 1 year)
Saturday: Hill sprints in Clon x5 (5K total) + Core session:
10min skipping warm up
*Evil wheel
* Weighted sit ups
* Sideways sit ups (x2)
4 drills, 4 sets and 10, 15, 20 & 25 for reps
Sunday: Relaxing. Went to see Skyfall with Liam. Great entertainment, thous reminded a small bit of Batman

Laying the foundation for happines

These days, I’ve yet again ‘broke the rules of conformity’ and decided to try it out on my own. First time I did this, was when I quit my very well paid PR job in Copenhagen, to pursue a career as freelance journalist and photographer. (Still working with this: I just turned in a short article on Tivoli, Copenhagen to The Irish Time).
This time around in Ireland – I didn’t quit (was asked to not come back, because of my ethics as a fitness professional), but I once again jumped out and trying to create something on my own  – this time for and with others.

The FighterGirls Club is my new baby. It’s all the best from my years with Martial Arts: Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing and Taekwondo. It’s all about having a great time – celebrating life. Getting stronger, fitter, better and faster – and getting the girls in my classes to do more, than they thought they could.

Today is one of those days, where it just felt ‘Right’. Like things are starting to come together. The girls (of all ages and sizes) who came in tonight (and day in CIT) just did amazing – and had fun at the same time. The glow on someone’s face who just had a brilliant time is worth gold. Eyes shinning, mouth a big smile, red cheeks and hair wet with sweat.
This is how I love seeing ‘my girls’ – and it makes all the extra trouble of starting ‘my own thing’ worth it.

I’ve come across several sites and stories lately, about how we are afraid to ‘be who we are’. How many people live like zombies to support themselves and their families. It reminds me how I could easily have stayed in my well paid job in Copenhagen and been unhappy, or told the bosses in Womens Fitness what they wanted to hear, instead of my genuine opinion. These realizations made me feel really blessed, that I can do what I love – even I’m living on a stone, and don’t have money for shoes or hairdresser.

Maybe this is my path – sharing what makes me happy (be it muay thai, stories, photos, research). Maybe I’m laying foundation to happiness. I think I’m on some path anyway.. we’ll see in the future, if this is mine!

Heart rate monitor training part II

Today I ran yet another 70% run, or I tried to. I felt most of the time, I could just have walked at a brisk pace. It was really not that enjoyable, I had to slow down every time I felt comfortable. And I’m really talking of slowing down. Almost to a ridicules pace where power walkers would have over-taken me. All because my heart rate was 10-15 bpm up from the 70% pace. So today was a bit of a struggle – even without traffic lights, hills and road crossings – things that normally spike my heart rate when running here.

But it was still a good 35min trip around the track, had sunshine half the time and could feel the warm sun beams on my back. Lovely and enjoyable to run outside and being kissed by the wind and the sun.

Training journal from past week:

Monday: Olympic weightlift training. Lot’s of broomstick action and a bit of C&J with the bar.
Tuesday: Boxercise class at Mayfield. Really cool class and we get to kick, since they have decent equipment! Lovely!
Wednesday: Olympic weightlifting. Less broomstick action than monday, and I could snatch with the bar!
App.: 5x 5 C&J @20kg bar, 3x 5 snatch @20kg bar.
Thursday: 5K at 70%, 2x Boxercise classes: CIT and Mayfield

Another training re-cap + thoughts on judges in the fight game

Time for another training re-cap – starting back in September:

Thursday: 6.8K with Liam (fast paced run)
Friday: Slow-mo run for 40 min run (70%)
Saturday: Roscarberry 5K fun run.
Liam and Jamie (Liam’s brother) had talked about doing the race the whole week, but Jamie stayed home, so it was just Liam & I on the road. I packed my bag to go for a leisure run while Liam was racing, and hadn’t plan on running the course. Liam somehow talked me into doing it (as he always does somehow) and I ended up getting 3rd place for the women. 23 overall I think. Not a great time, but took it nice and handy on the first half of the route, since I didn’t knew it. (Loop 2.5K x 2= 5K run), so can only be happy with the result.
Sunday: Rest day

Monday: Olympic weightlift training: Thanks to my injuries it was a night with the broomstick for Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Oly bar for Clean pulls only. Didn’t feel like a proper session, but nice to know, I still got the technique!
Tuesday: Did I do any runs??
Wednesday: 30 min of slow mo run followed by another session of Oly weightlifting – just as light as monday. Ended night with 2x 4 pull ups – still got a small bit strength left!
Thursday: Speed day.
1K warm up, then 6x 400m sprints, 200m walk/ jog in between + 2 Boxercise classes
Friday: Fish & Chips with Liam’s mum and Hans – Not really a training day, but good for feeling slightly Irish

Anthony Kane vs Craig Jose at Neptune Stadium Oct. 6th, 2012.

Saturday: Not training related, but gonna put this in anyway!
Neptune Stadium hosted the huge Siam Warriors event, which meant, not only some of Irelands best Nak Muays in action, but also a visit from legendary Liam Harrison. I’d really looked forward for this event and have been offering the best help I could give to promote it: One world – One Muay thai – One Love.
So it was with joy Liam and I went in saturday night. And there were some great match up in between. Amongst a stunning performance by Anthony Kane against Craig Jose. After the first round Jose looked like he had Kane figured out, but midway in second round Kane sank in a heavy right hand and send Jose to an 8 count. Jose got in trouble but got saved by the bell, and somewhat bounched back in the third round, while Kane just kept patiently waiting for the next mistake by Jose. It came in the fourth and Kane got the KO. Had definitely not seen that coming from the 1st round – Anthony Kane is packing some heavy, accurate hands!

Then there was a lesser and more dark side to the event: Some unfortunate poor judge performances! A good judge is someone who’s presence you don’t notice in the ring – and if you do, it’s only to put fighters safety first. Unfortunately the Irish ISKA judges present in Neptune Stadium was making themselves noticed several times that night. And it was not for the good.
They clearly have NOT been to a seminar in Muay thai rules and point system. Coming from ISKA – a traditional Kickboxing organisation, I’m sure they’re very competent as kickboxing or K-1 judges, but Muay Thai – they didn’t have a clue! Totally disregarded the value of the Clinch game – which is half of the fight. No feeling  for ‘Wall of Defense‘ or different point scores in Power techniques vs. powerless techniques. No clue about ‘Ring generalship‘ – Ok, this is a tough one to grasp, but still! If you’re judging others performance, the least you could do is to learn the rules and regulations for the sport in question. After watching and commentating hundreds of fights -and even being in a judging chair myself, I think judging is a huge responsibility and a job that should not be taking lightly. You’re basically in a position where you can make or break a fighter and his/ hers dreams.
It’s a shame when what you remember the most from a fight, is a horrible judge performance!

New week – new post will be coming. I plan to continue with another week of Oly training. See how my injuries are doing, hopefully also get a trip into a thaiboxing gym this week – and yeah – a little running.

11 day with Ross & a fantastic box night at Womens Fitness

Ladies from Womens Fitness and K2C, please add me on Facebook, so I can add you to the ‘Taninja Fightergirls Cork’ group. In the group you can get news on seminars, events, post pics, questions (about training, diet, fighting etc.), funny stories etc. and share it with other women, who are into the boxing craze 😉

So we finally got around to it:

Ross challenge day 11:
8 x 200 meter sprints
5x 50m sprints

Unfortunately the track was wet, and sky still pouring rain, so my run wasn’t so fluid and ‘all out’ as I imagined and wanted it to be. Subconsciously I held myself back, even I tried to tell myself it was ok. It might have been from a fear of sliding in the wet.
Did consider to sprint barefoot, but wasn’t sure if the wet track surface would tear up my skin.

Anyway, ran as fast as I could during the circumstances. Liam told me, my last round was 41 sec. I think, I had one or two faster than this, but the first three, wasn’t that fast.

The Ross challenge was to be followed by a Core, which I took care of during my evening hours at Womens Fitness. And then I had a splendid evening with the girls in my Boxercise class at Womens Fitness. They rocked the house!!
Some new faces put a lot of effort into class and ended up, getting a great work out. And my ‘old’ familiar faces, well – they just getting better and better. Starting to look like boxers, when throwing punches. Now we just need to work on the guard! 😉
One of the best moments this evening, was the noticeable progress and one of the new faces, whom I’ve done lots of PT sessions with. She told me she really didn’t like classes that much, but decided to try the class anyway. Her and her two friends had a blast! Seeing all the ladies working hard and making progress – that’s what makes it all worth to me!!

+ Swings, Squats to OH press, Mountain climbers, push ups, split jumps, Lunges & 3 Long Cycle 12kg. Actually wanted to do more long cycles, but forgot about it. Next week when I’m back in Ireland, it’s time to build strength.

Work Capacity 101 and Hello ladies

NB. I am no longer doing this class or am a part of Womensfitnessplus in Cork. Big differences in our professional ethics (or lack of same) put an end to our collaboration. I will miss all the wonderful women I’ve met in my classes and PT sessions, but I will not miss being treated with condesenting arrogance for my professional knowledge and/ or as a fellow human being.
Since Womensfitnessplus made it mandatory for their trainers to sell at least 3 Kinetica products on each shift, I had to say I wouldn’t do it. I’d give information about the products, but under no circumstances would I push the products to women, who didn’t need them. I don’t believe in selling useless stuff, or even worse telling lies to make a profit like.
I’m a fitness professional with ethics and beliefs on what’s right and whats wrong – I work for results, not for greed.
As a result our ways departed – and despite I miss the happy women – I would choose to stand by my ethics again.

 

Wednesday = 2 boxercise classes at Womens Fitness + PT sessions, and today – due to last four days of the company of Ross & Kettlebells: Really, really sore pecs (pectorals). Today brought along – beside the usual also the dreaded Work Capacity 101.

Ross must have thought this one up after a nightmare, he wanted others to suffer from as well. It’s definitely not for kids!:
* 5 Pull ups – I alternated the grips and had to do several rounds with 5 on 2 go’s
* 10 Medicine Ball Slamms (9kg)
* 15 Burpees
* 20 Jumping Jacks
10 rounds or 20 min

I think my time was around 24 min. Not 100% sure, could have been one song (about 3.5min) shorter. But I lost a lot of time on the Pull Ups. Due to being severe sore pecs, Pull Ups felt like death after the first two rounds. However I managed, and am happy I completed all 10 rounds.

Boxercise at Womens Fitness today! The morning class got the joy of doing a very short version of the Ross challenge: 1 min. Wall Squat, 10 squat jumps. An older woman who stated, that she didn’t do sit ups, cause she couldn’t, ended up doing 15!! Very happy and proud of her. The word NO, doesn’t exist in my classes!
In addition to this both classes (the evening class very happening!! Super hyper, good energy and loads of smiley faces) are doing ATG squats now. I do believe my ‘happy butt’ mission will be completed this summer!!
Evening class just blasted away – I was very happily surprised to see a more than full booked class coming in, with the weather we’re having in Ireland these days. It’s warm and sunny – a perfect excuse for a stay at home and barbecue weather. But still my lovely girls finds their way to class!!
