Day 71 – The first time

Two days ago, I took 4 of my regular and one of my new girls to a ‘real gym’, and let them sparre each other (not the new girl). I’ve been super excited for this event, since we started to plan it, but on the other hand, I was also quite nervous.

I known the girls for a long time now. One of them almost a year. So I know they’re tough and often gives everything they got during training – but how they react, when they tried to hit one another? I had no idea.  Well, I did have an idea – cause we’re all girls. And most girls, unlike guys – perceive sparring with a great amount of caution and respect – and a bit hesitation. Where as guys sees sparring as just another very physical state of competing with each other, and often throws down, without any hesitation. Girls seem to take a small step at the time and offering a lot of apologies the first many times they hit someone.

My girls were great! They jumped in, and even they were holding back, you could tell, that they wanted to try it. Yet – ofcourse feeling a little insecure and new at it – but everyone loved it. No one cried, no one got scared. Of course I had 2 first rounds, with limited action: First round f.ex. only punch with left hand, right hand serve as guard.
So I think, it was a good way to introduce them to contact. A bit more controlled, with a keen focus on protection at the same time.

I still remember my first sparring. I finally was allowed to sparre, but got send in, with an experienced girl, who – as far as I recall, just wanted to kill me. lol. And it was all out. Legs and hands – kicks and punches – everything, with the trainer enthusiastic coaching the other girl. I remember, we ‘ran around a lot’ and finally I hit her hard on the nose, and she started crying. And that was it. No more sparring. The trainer never said anything to me. I switched gym shortly after that!

Past three weeks, I’ve 2-3 weight sessions pr. week. (Legs only)
2 Swim sessions pr week (skipped  a week)
2 x FighterGirl classes a week
..And a run today, in the sun!

Day 80 – Bad training/ Bad experience

There is usually not such a thing as bad training in my vocabulary. And I don’t recall ever walking out on one in all my years as active: From handball playing kid to Taekwondo, kickbox etc. But today I lost my cool and left the scene, before the fun even began.

Once again we were in Butchers Fight Gym- today for a sparring session. I’d actually looked forward for this, cause I have an interview coming up later, and I thought starting the day with a good training, would be just the right thing. Training muay thai and/ or sparring usually lift my spirit like nothing else, and it’s the biggest love of my life.

Under other circumstances it might have been the best decision ever – going for this morning class or in another gym like Mikenta or Siam it surely would have been fine. Unfortunately for me BFG is full of beginners and once again, I get paired up with a big guy, who had no control over his body. He just went beserk on me. I tried to answer back, but he was too big and too powerful – and I would probably have left with a black eye and loose teeth, had I stayed. Normally I would have biting my teeth and just get it over with, but I just had enough today – I threw down my gloves and left the gym. For the first time ever!!

I’m sick and tired of function as a freaking punching bag for guys who are +20kg bigger than me. Who have no control and no experience and are basically just out to kill you. And this is not the first time, this has happened to me in that gym. Not the same guy – but same story.
Some in-experienced guy who thinks he’s Bruce Lee, who have no control over his power or his limbs.

Sure enough he comes out afterwards with some lame comment, that he only went 30-40%, which made me even angrier, cause it was so clear he didn’t take any responsibilty and just trying to pretend it was me being to ‘fragile’ or too ‘female’. I watched him sparre with two other guys and the exact same thing happend: He went all crazy on them, so they had to retaliate. At least he got some huge blows from someone – but f*** it. Karma or no Karma – He just ruined my whole saturday!

I’m really fed up sparring with these guys!

Day 86 – Training blog (MT & run)

Morning: 8K at a reasonable pace around the lakes in Copenhagen. Felt good after the first 3 -4K.

Evening: Muay Thai @Butchers Fight Gym. 1½ hour with Kru Toy and the BFG Muay thai team. Training consisted of the usual skipping/ running warm up, followed by a slight change on the pads. We did two rounds: 1 round boxing combo and 1 round box + kick combo – and after that – sparring for 20 min.

I teamed up with Camilla, who is the only other female (in ‘my size’). Even with a difference between our levels, I do enjoy training with her and she got a little stronger since I was in Denmark 18 months ago, and actually pack quite a right kick now.
So it’s a quite nice training when she’s there. The pace and power used on the pads are decent and we take it handy with the sparring.
Liam had a good training for once. He teamed up with a former Danish champion, so for once, he finally had a good strong partner, so he didn’t have to hold back.

I still don’t feel in shape to go toe to toe with the guys. Both times I’ve sparred or clinching with guys here in Copenhagen (BFG and Mikenta), the guys kind of have the ‘life or death’ pace – and I’m just not there yet in my cardio. So can’t really enjoy it – so I politely refused to spare with a guy last night, whom I judged to be ‘beginner’. No need for that – not until I’m in a better place anyway.

If you’ve read my blog from time to time, you’ll know I’ve been haunted by injuries around the wrist and elbows. Last night I got another one for the collection: Ganglion cyst. Plain textbook (most common in women, often in gymnastics or others who put a lot of pressure on the wrist): On top of the wrist, appeared during push ups – not painful.
It also say they usually disappear on their own. Which I hope. It kind of looks like a bone is sticking out of my hand now 😦

‘Morning’ session:
15 min running (stupid machine wouldn’t let me see distance only time)

Little play with snatch and Clean & Jerk, with a 20K barbell

Then of to the good ol’ stuff:
Deadlift
1x 10x 30K
2x 5x 40K
2x 5x 50K
2x 5x 60K

Full Contact twist
1x 10x +5K
5x 10x 10K

Evening:
1½ hour muay thai in Siam with Clemme as coach. Really nice combos – even did a ‘dutch man’. Very cool – and about 20/ 25 min sparring. Also really nice!

 

Also saw a really good friend today. Made me so happy to talk to – and so nice to be supported in being me!! Just a very good day! Tomorrow will be a really good day aswell: Fight Club finally airing the big boys! K-1 Grand Prix – Final 8 – 2010!!
