Day 75 – To Tri or not to Tri (back Online)

Since we were at the KMD Copenhagen Ironman, Liam caught the Ironman bug, and is now talking Tri races. While I have no doubt, that he would be a perfect Ironman and do the various Tri races with gold and glory – I’m not sure, I would. Simply for that reason, I don’t LOVE running, biking or swimming, as I LOVE Muay Thai.

To do a good triathlon – whether it’s the sprint version, the Olympic, the 70.3 or the full Ironman, you need to train hard and consistent. Especially in the swim department. And while I like swimming, and even look forward to ‘learn’ to crawl again, I don’t know, if I would enjoy to do this every day.
I don’t mind going to the gym every day to lift weights for a time. I don’t mind running every day – for a period or as part as a warm up. But so far in my life with sports, there has been only one thing, I love to do day in, day out: Fight Sport (Muay thai, boxing, kickboxing). It’s that simple! This is what I love! (even with a fuc*** up arm!)

Anyway… I have a feeling our training is going to take a change, and I do think, I’m gonna follow Liam into the pool. Then we see, where we go from there.

Previous days of training:
Yesterday: 1 hour of Abs, Buns and Wheels (Mostly BW), 40 min of Cross training
Monday:
Sunday: 5K
Saturday: 8K
Friday: 5K
Thursday: 1hr Abs, Buns & Wheels, 8K

Day 84 – The male beauty

This afternoon we visited Christiania for a short time, and I actually saw my first ever ‘Synthol’ guy. I also saw a guy in a small sequined dress, but that’s a common affair. Synthol injections in the muscles – I actually thought guys were too smart for stuff like that, at least since Gregg Valentino appeared in ‘The man who’s arms exploded’.
At least I didn’t expect to ever see a pair of synthol arms in nice, quiet, educated Copenhagen. But there they were – coming towards me. Sitting on the shoulders of an angry-looking man. The kind with neck tattoos and a look that tells you, if you look at him a half a minute too long, you won’t be looking at anything but dirt for the next 15 minutes – while getting beat to shit. (However – there is that question on whether he would be able to use his synthol arms or not!!)

I was very surprised to see him, but then I came home and saw this (see photo below) posted on Facebook, and I realized that men are under a lot of pressure from the media – the fashion – the rich and famous to look their best. Just as women have been for decades.
To be honest from all my years of training stuff, I guess, I’ve been used to being around fit guys, and I never really thought about how some men must struggle to live up to todays beauty ideal of the male body. At most I’ve heard guys complaining about weight loss when they were getting ready for fights – but never actually heard anyone talk about the hard work on putting on muscles. (except for the guys already lifting tons, who are suffering from bigorexia ( muscle dysmorphia)).

Now, I don’t think the synthol guy injected his arms just to look sexy for us (the opposite sex). I think he just as much, wanted to look big and strong to scare – or demand respect from his peers. And in a way, I guess it’s the home (male) version of silicone and botox – just for men.
The beauty of men have changed as well as for women – and even it’s nice too look at abs and big strong legs, I’m not sure our ideals of beauty is for the better. Too much emphasis on the outside and not enough caring on what goes on inside.

Days training: 8K
We’ve visited my parents this weekend, so instead of the lakes in Cph, we went for a run in the nearby forest. We had pretty good run – at least I think so. Pace was doable and half way in, we increased a bit, but I could still toggle along.
-As a fun surprise we caught a glimpse of the ‘Post Danmark rundt’ bicycle race, on the way back. It was a last-minute excuse to add a little extra to our run, that made it possible for us to cheer for a few seconds, while the riders stormed by. Hereafter it was back on the road for the last app. 1k back.

On the last 100m, I signaled to Liam to sprint back.. and he just took off. Usually I feel I can keep a distance to him, but today he just kept pulling away. Absolutely blown away!

Day 86 – Training blog (MT & run)

Morning: 8K at a reasonable pace around the lakes in Copenhagen. Felt good after the first 3 -4K.

Evening: Muay Thai @Butchers Fight Gym. 1½ hour with Kru Toy and the BFG Muay thai team. Training consisted of the usual skipping/ running warm up, followed by a slight change on the pads. We did two rounds: 1 round boxing combo and 1 round box + kick combo – and after that – sparring for 20 min.

I teamed up with Camilla, who is the only other female (in ‘my size’). Even with a difference between our levels, I do enjoy training with her and she got a little stronger since I was in Denmark 18 months ago, and actually pack quite a right kick now.
So it’s a quite nice training when she’s there. The pace and power used on the pads are decent and we take it handy with the sparring.
Liam had a good training for once. He teamed up with a former Danish champion, so for once, he finally had a good strong partner, so he didn’t have to hold back.

I still don’t feel in shape to go toe to toe with the guys. Both times I’ve sparred or clinching with guys here in Copenhagen (BFG and Mikenta), the guys kind of have the ‘life or death’ pace – and I’m just not there yet in my cardio. So can’t really enjoy it – so I politely refused to spare with a guy last night, whom I judged to be ‘beginner’. No need for that – not until I’m in a better place anyway.

If you’ve read my blog from time to time, you’ll know I’ve been haunted by injuries around the wrist and elbows. Last night I got another one for the collection: Ganglion cyst. Plain textbook (most common in women, often in gymnastics or others who put a lot of pressure on the wrist): On top of the wrist, appeared during push ups – not painful.
It also say they usually disappear on their own. Which I hope. It kind of looks like a bone is sticking out of my hand now 😦

Day 89 – Running in Copenhagen

Spend the day with an old friend of mine, walking around in the city and even I wasn’t shopping, it was a thrill to go in the shops and look at all the stuff! It might sound stupid if you’re a guy, or if you’re never had ‘the shopping gen’ – but if you did, you’ll sympathize with someone who’s been living in Cork (which besides TK MAXX has close to zero great shopping opportunities and who’s only spend money on training gear for 18 months), to all of a sudden being hit with the wast options of shopping in Copenhagen.

In the evening Liam and I went for a run around the lakes. It’s a great run – almost 8K from the apartment I think – and it’s all flat with one way ‘build in stops’ as in light signals.
Unfortunately I was feeling horrible and the run was just as hard, as had it been in the hills of Clonaklity.

I seriously felt like I haven’t been training for months, and just turned into a vegetable with no legs, no muscles and no lungs. It felt really strange. We were joking about going to die when we get back to Ireland, having to run in the hills again.
Hope it will be better next time – and still looking for new runners.

Ps. Again still apologizing for the late blogs. Trying to get up to date!

Do do run run again

Liam’s been at this running program for the past six weeks, and while I’ve some days been looking a little jealous of his runs and his commitment, I’ve been fine by hanging out at home, Sloughing on the internet. And of course I’ve been (and am) supportive of his running and commitment to the program – but I’ve felt fine about my training in my classes and the extra TRX I’m putting in at the moment, to not really bother getting into running myself.
-And I had that nasty experience with my knee getting all f***ed up after a run, a couple of months ago.

This saturday we somehow managed to get to Brucies for Thai boxing. Which was great – I always love a good thaibox training – especially now that my finger is fine. So had a blast, but also felt it was hard to go on the pads. I mean – of course I could do it for 5 or more rounds, if I had to. But it was tough and I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

'We're on a road to nowhere..and we're running!!'

‘We’re on a road to nowhere..and we’re running!!’

On the way home Liam said, he was happy we went thaiboxing after all. And he added, he felt really good about going on the pads, as he felt more in control of his heart rate (stamina) and could pick up or slow down the pace without getting out of breath. He noted, that it might come from all the running he’s been doing.

I thought about it and it makes sense. And I thought to myself, maybe I should try running too – with the program that is. (It’s a heart rate based program that ensures you don’t go 80% on all your runs and thereby burn out faster). So my mind was positive primed when Liam (yesterday) suggested that I join his program – and my goal is to see it this week out – and then decide from there, depending on knees and limbs.
There is 6 weeks left of the program and if all goes well after week 1, I’ll follow through the last 5.

Training update including past week:

Today (Monday): 6miles on 70%

My diet is back to No Gluten – except I’m having a cheat day on saturday, where wheat & sugar is allowed. Needles to say, I’ve spent Saturday stuffing my head with chocolate stuff and a couple of mini pancakes and some Danish liquorice.
I’ve seem to be quite happy about this arrangement.

The influence of diet or how to gain two inches in a night

It would be my guess, that most women can relate to what I’m about to show now. Cause, I don’t think myself to be all that special as in ‘freak of nature’ special – but who knows. I’ve actually never really discussed this in details with my fellow ladies – only like a silent, un-spoken agreement, that we all be nodding ‘uhmm’ to, when the subject arises every now and again.

Cause, it might not be true for men – but for us women, a gain of 2-3kg in a night is possible. I know Liam and other men will easily drop 2-3kg (or even more) in a night. And in a brief period (in the duration of a month), I too, will be loosing weight at night, instead of gaining. However – monthly weight gains from out of nowhere, is something us women have to live with, unless we’re athletes who fucked up the system. Then we’re pretty much the same all the time.

Anyway – I discovered another way of gaining – not weight, but inches. All in just 24 hours.
I’ve been on glutenfree diet for about 6 weeks now, I think – expect for my trip to Denmark, where I ate Danish pastry (wienerbrød) every day – and often 2 or three times a day. And I enjoyed every shameful bit of it!! Te-birkes, chokolade wienerdrøm, høj snegl, træstammer!! Yums!!!  I came back from Denmark last sunday ( a week ago), body shocked to pieces by all the pastry, so I had a week of basically no sweet or wheat.  (The funny thing was however, I didn’t notice a huge change in my body. Maybe because of the continuous overload?)

This weekend however, I got my hands on a piece of chocolate, pecan, caramel tort from Deasys. And it’s absolutely just as gorgeous as it sounds – and taste it too! But besides being loaded with sugar, its also made with a small amount of flour.
And I could tell!! All sunday morning stomach was in bits – and I’ve grown a clip or two in my belt!!
All for a piece of tort!

Crazy huh!! Goes to show how much food influence our bodies in both feel and look!
I might do another wheat day again – as it really is nice to eat cakes and the like. (and I have my eyes on a nice pizza too), but I also have to say, that even the results of my changed diet aren’t that overwhelming (body fat percentage down 2%, bodyweight about 1.5kg), I think, I do feel better in my body.

If you're thinking of doing it - I'd say 'Go for it'!! You can always go back, if it doesn't suit you!!

Training journal

While I’m putting together ‘Fight Sport – The love of my life’ blog in my mind, I thought I update you a bit on the training side of life – with a broken finger.

For the moment I’m teaching a few handful of classes each week, so I get my basics of body weight excercise down. Extras are in these weeks complementaries, as I can’t box or lift heavy if I want my finger to heal up. And after a couple of months of swollen, somewhat painful finger, I’ve decided to let it get the needed rest and hopefully, it will heal up nicely.
(I can’t wait to go boxing again thou!!!)

Not much running!
Meek squats – Trying to do the smart thing and start-up slowly again. Ending my 4 week program next week, so will be putting together a new one to start later in March. Upping the weights – and hopefully the finger is healed!
Really miss training Muay Thai!! Hoping to join one of the gyms here in Ireland soon!

Ps. Despite of terrible, terrible cold weather (and mostly rain!), I’m really happy these days in Ireland. Liam and I are doing very well and I really like my new job at Mi.Fitness. In fact, I’m sitting here looking forward to go to work later today!!

PPs. Photo-related: I never fell in with my diet. Just had a day when I got the wheat craving. So far, I’ve been very good at avoiding wheat and gluten. (However not sure about the muesli, I had this morning in CIT! We were out of yogurt at home, so had breakfast in college after the class). Can’t see any progress this week from last, which could be due to two things:
1) I eat a sh** load of food
2) Body is at that point, where changes takes longer to appear

Anyway will update on this next week!
