Day 71 – The first time

Two days ago, I took 4 of my regular and one of my new girls to a ‘real gym’, and let them sparre each other (not the new girl). I’ve been super excited for this event, since we started to plan it, but on the other hand, I was also quite nervous.

I known the girls for a long time now. One of them almost a year. So I know they’re tough and often gives everything they got during training – but how they react, when they tried to hit one another? I had no idea.  Well, I did have an idea – cause we’re all girls. And most girls, unlike guys – perceive sparring with a great amount of caution and respect – and a bit hesitation. Where as guys sees sparring as just another very physical state of competing with each other, and often throws down, without any hesitation. Girls seem to take a small step at the time and offering a lot of apologies the first many times they hit someone.

My girls were great! They jumped in, and even they were holding back, you could tell, that they wanted to try it. Yet – ofcourse feeling a little insecure and new at it – but everyone loved it. No one cried, no one got scared. Of course I had 2 first rounds, with limited action: First round f.ex. only punch with left hand, right hand serve as guard.
So I think, it was a good way to introduce them to contact. A bit more controlled, with a keen focus on protection at the same time.

I still remember my first sparring. I finally was allowed to sparre, but got send in, with an experienced girl, who – as far as I recall, just wanted to kill me. lol. And it was all out. Legs and hands – kicks and punches – everything, with the trainer enthusiastic coaching the other girl. I remember, we ‘ran around a lot’ and finally I hit her hard on the nose, and she started crying. And that was it. No more sparring. The trainer never said anything to me. I switched gym shortly after that!

2 x FighterGirl classes a week
..And a run today, in the sun!

Day 75 – To Tri or not to Tri (back Online)

Since we were at the KMD Copenhagen Ironman, Liam caught the Ironman bug, and is now talking Tri races. While I have no doubt, that he would be a perfect Ironman and do the various Tri races with gold and glory – I’m not sure, I would. Simply for that reason, I don’t LOVE running, biking or swimming, as I LOVE Muay Thai.

To do a good triathlon – whether it’s the sprint version, the Olympic, the 70.3 or the full Ironman, you need to train hard and consistent. Especially in the swim department. And while I like swimming, and even look forward to ‘learn’ to crawl again, I don’t know, if I would enjoy to do this every day.
I don’t mind going to the gym every day to lift weights for a time. I don’t mind running every day – for a period or as part as a warm up. But so far in my life with sports, there has been only one thing, I love to do day in, day out: Fight Sport (Muay thai, boxing, kickboxing). It’s that simple! This is what I love! (even with a fuc*** up arm!)

Anyway… I have a feeling our training is going to take a change, and I do think, I’m gonna follow Liam into the pool. Then we see, where we go from there.

Day 76 – How do you move

+ Ido Portale movements with Pernille. Pernille did Ido Portale’s movement camp in Singapore, and has generously offered to share a bit of all the stuff she learned. Today we tried 6 different ‘crawls’*, which were all super challenging: Working on balance, coordination and mooooovement. Really fun and exciting. Definitely going to continue with these and when I feel secure in them, I’ll try to pass it on.

Training update:
Monday 12K
Tuesday Body toning class in Fresh Fitness Hvidovre + 5K
Wednesday Thaiboxing + Movement (sprints tonight)

6 ‘crawls’ – as best I can describe them:
**2x rolls – one ‘normal’ and one landing on the heels with open legs
*One crawl with only 1 hand/ 1 foot on the floor at the same time. Sounds easy, but you’ll have to think and coordinate to make it work
*Same crawl as above, but with push ups and partner setting the distance. (Partner showing where to set the next hand – when the hand lands, you do a push up. Move leg before hand at the movements).
*Open chest crawl: Yoga position with one foot and opposite hand forward. Other leg far back and other arm straight above head – Open
chest. Lift hind leg, set hand down as far forward as you can, turn sideways on first foot (which are already in the floor) – lift other knee to the chest  and put up other arm straight above head
*Frog crawl: Start in squat position, put your right hand out in front of your left knee, and follow up with your left hand (next to right). Jump to the left, by putting your weight on your arms, and jump with the right leg going in front of your body. Land with your left leg straight and right leg in squat. Lift your hands and get into the squat position again.

Day 79 – Joy!

Well – I’m actually a few days late. I know!! (last entry is from Saturday and today is Tuesday). Once again I ran out of internet and didn’t get around to it, until today. So I’m just gonna pick up the puck from where I left it – even I know, I’m probably about 5 days behind at this point! (My appologies, if you’re following the 100days challenge).

Lot’s of joy this morning! First time in 2 weeks, I made it to Mikenta’s morning class. It was really good, with headcoach and owner Brian Tallerik as the captain. Lot’s of padwork, followed by 4 rounds of bagwork. Worked with a very young girl (Anna) and had a good time. I’ve really come to love Brian’s classes, as I always seem to be learning a bit new and get inspired to better myself, and ofcourse, as always in the back of my mind: I’m thinking of what and how to bring it back to my girls in Ireland.

Also joyous: I got more internet pay time!

And last joy but not least: I got a Cross training class tonight in Fresh Fitness
I really look forward to teach a class again and I’m pretty sure, it’ll be a good class. Have planned 3 rounds with various exercises of different difficulties and challenges. But!! The best plans can easily change when it comes to classes; more people need more stations – less people might benefit from following each other. We’ll see!

Strength and Conditioning KBTe style

This past weekend I was in Dublin for the KBTe Strength & Conditioning level I course. The course covered Weightlifting (Olympic), powerlifting and Kettlebells.

Despite I was staying next door at O’Sheas Merchant Hotel, I had a good weekend. The course was good, and even I’ve been doing Olympic weightlifting for some time, I learned some new stuff, as they broke down the lifts. When I had my first day with OL lifting, I got a broomstick in my hand and was told to practice the snatch. After about 30 min, I was promoted to the bar. Hahaha. The KBTe guys had a different approach, which was more beginner friendly to newcomers – but then, I doubt most people will try and tackly Olympic weightlifting before they know their powerlifts.

As for the hotel, I really have to say: DON’T STAY there, unless you’re having a hen or stag party – or just want to party, be drunk and awake all night. Staying there just to have a bed for the night (and stuff to do next morning) as I did, is a big! mistake. There is a live band playing from midnight to 2.30am. In my case the first night was George Michael covers (which weren’t terrible) and Tina Turner covers (which were terrible!!) last night. On top of that, you have drunk Irish men (of both sexes) running around screaming, slamming doors and trying to get into your room, because they’re so drunk, they forgot what room they’re in.
And to make matters worse: No breakfast before 9am sunday morning! Which sucks double, when you have to lift kettlebells for 3 hours before noon!
I can never recommend this place to anyone. I’m sorry!

Back to my course – last day sunday consisted of KB work, to which the guys added a compound. After every new technique, we did the compound all over again – adding reps from the new technique. I think, I saw grown men cry in the end, but I’m not sure – was busy crying myself! (It was a tough cookie! – see picture for details).

Anyway, it was a great weekend even the lifts were simple. (For example did they exclude the split jerk!) It was fun to be ‘in a class’ again for once!

My own training so far in 2013 consist of:
Classes
Weight training
Running
Muay Thai (unfortunately not so often as I’ve would like)

For the next 4 weeks I’m following my S & C program, which is also the last part of the assesment!
Day 1, week 1 look like this:
* Snatch 5x 5
* Squat 4x 6
* Military 3x 8
* Pull Ups 3x 8
Everything is 80% , except for pull ups. Going to do some small adjustments in weight, but kept resting times according to program (almost), so everything felt good.

Reflections

I previous mentioned that Ninna was visiting from Denmark this week. (She just left this morning…. way early!) What I didn’t mention was, that she is a retired fighter with fights in Boxing and thaiboxing – and now is active as a judge and trainer in boxing.
I also didn’t mention, that she came to my FighterGirls classes and took over the teaching process (for about half an hour).

Before she came, ‘d send her my working schedule (which left too little time for us, to hit out on the irish roads and see the country side), and I asked her, if she wanted to come and train with the girls. (I actually offered her to come and train in all my classes/ or gym training, so she wouldn’t get too bored). She said yes to train my girls.

Without realizing it (until now), it was the first test of The FighterGirls Club concept. Since the birth of my ‘FighterGirl baby’ three months ago, the only person who’s been training these girls have been me. The only eyes who spotted errors, mistakes, techniques – was mine. Only voice who asked them to work more and work harder – mine too.

And before even thinking about it, I brought perhaps Denmark’s best female boxing coach to my classes – to see my ‘students’, who are not ‘real’ FighterGirls. (We don’t sparre or have physical contact). Didn’t realize it would open myself and ‘my girls’ up to critique -> but of course it did. Ninna is a strong minded and strong opinionated woman.

So she told me – she actually liked the girls. Could even see potentials in them! I was a very proud ‘mum’ right then and there!

Despite some hard times atm., her remark made my heart warm, and it makes all the effort I put into this worth it. My girls are going to be top class FighterGirls!

Happy Valentines day

I’m still alive and kicking here in Ireland, despite the weather and the public transport system continuously trying to get me down. But I’ve been crazy busy the past few weeks. Since I started working with MiFitness and CIT, I’m often doing classes both morning and evening, and its left me really ‘to tired to blog’ – between everything else that’s going on.

Like this week a friend of mine from Denmark (Ninna) have visited, and it’s been good, but sure a little stressful. For her as well. I love working with MiFitness, they are really great guys (Brenda and Conor), but some days it’s tough, to not work 8 hours straight – but here and there, drizzled all out over the course of a day.

For my training,  a lot of it goes on in the many classes I’ve started to teach: Burn and Tone, 20:20:20, Abs Blast, Circuit and Kettlebells. For The FighterGirls and the new morning boxercise class, I don’t do much: just demonstrating and sorting kick and punches out. (No kicks in Boxercise). MiFitness embraced The FighterGirl concept, which is so cool (I really love them for this!)! The members seem to love it and I really enjoy teaching my kicks and tricks to more corkian ladies.

However due to Irish public transport or lack of the same, I am actually picking up weights again. To be on work on time, I have to get there an hour earlier: So I might as well use the gym.

Wrist, elbow and now finger all are ‘work-able’, which unfortunately doesn’t mean good. So I’m slowly picking up strength again, and trying new stuff, since the gym carries cables, leg press and hamstring curl. Btw. I love the hamstring curl!

I don’t have enough numbers, but will work on getting my blogging on again, and start posting some numbers!

Anyways, Happy Valentines day, pancake day and ash wednesday-day. For me it’s all the same: It’s GYM Day every day!! 😉
