Day 91 – The positive weekend

Liam and I agreed yesterday evening to have a weekend, where we couldn’t say anything negative. About anything or anyone. Only positive things was to leave our lips this weekend.

The idea grew from a thought of how words create our reality and enhance our emotions – and our experience of life. If by choosing only to pronounce positive words, could we have a happier weekend?
I think we did have a good Saturday, but we did encounter a few ‘on edge’ situations during the day. And of course it was in the traffic. Where else does ‘on edge’ situations occur?

On the other end of the scale, we had a great massage in Natha Yoga house after training. Was just pure brilliant!!

I look forward for tomorrow too – I think it’s gonna be a happy sunday

Training today:
Thaiboxing in Butchers Fight Gym w/ Kru Toy. Teamed up with Liam, so the poor guy had to restraint his powers. Kru Toy made a good finisher with knees, and Liam let me clinch a little with him afterwards.
Weightlifting in Butchers Lab – Snatch, Jerks & cleans cross fit style. Was nice to try something different + I got a really excellent tip for my wrists!

Training journal

While I’m putting together ‘Fight Sport – The love of my life’ blog in my mind, I thought I update you a bit on the training side of life – with a broken finger.

For the moment I’m teaching a few handful of classes each week, so I get my basics of body weight excercise down. Extras are in these weeks complementaries, as I can’t box or lift heavy if I want my finger to heal up. And after a couple of months of swollen, somewhat painful finger, I’ve decided to let it get the needed rest and hopefully, it will heal up nicely.
(I can’t wait to go boxing again thou!!!)
Training from the last week or so – in backwards order:

Tuesday:
3x 3 Squats @ 52.5kg
3x 6 Military @ 20kg
3x 6 Hamstring Curls @35kg
20:20:20 Class
2x FighterGirls Club
Monday:
3x 3 Snatch @ 20kg
3x 3 Goodmornings @45kg
3x 3 Squats @50kg
Boxercise class

Sunday:
5K run with Liam – Freaking cold weather, felt like my face was gonna come off the first 10 minutes

Saturday:
Nuthin’ – watching the great Saenchai putting on a clinic in the Neptune Stadium

Friday:
Muay Thai @Brucies Gym. Just worked the bag + Liam holding pads for me (just kicks, elbows and left hand work)

Thursday:
Circuit Class, Kettlebell class & FighterGirls

Wednesday:
3x 3 Squats @50kg
3x 3 Goodmornings @40kg
3x 3 Hamstrings @ 30kg
Classes: Burn & Tone, The FighterGirls Club & Abs Blast

Notes:
Not much running!
Meek squats – Trying to do the smart thing and start-up slowly again. Ending my 4 week program next week, so will be putting together a new one to start later in March. Upping the weights – and hopefully the finger is healed!
Really miss training Muay Thai!! Hoping to join one of the gyms here in Ireland soon!

Ps. Despite of terrible, terrible cold weather (and mostly rain!), I’m really happy these days in Ireland. Liam and I are doing very well and I really like my new job at Mi.Fitness. In fact, I’m sitting here looking forward to go to work later today!!

PPs. Photo-related: I never fell in with my diet. Just had a day when I got the wheat craving. So far, I’ve been very good at avoiding wheat and gluten. (However not sure about the muesli, I had this morning in CIT! We were out of yogurt at home, so had breakfast in college after the class). Can’t see any progress this week from last, which could be due to two things:
1) I eat a sh** load of food
2) Body is at that point, where changes takes longer to appear

Anyway will update on this next week!

Set backs

We all have them from time to time. Smaller or larger – short or longer. The set backs that reminds us, we are merely humans. Strong but fragile, iron-willed but weak. Progress is two-step forward and one step back.

Yesterday I posted a photo of a beginning mid-section, which wanted to come out to the world and today, I’ve been suffering the most brutal ‘I want a scone/ muffin/ cake/ cookie’ mood. Weather has been shi* over here in Ireland today (worse than usual), so have been miserable, cold and wet and on top of this, I realized I forgot my camera in Clonakilty, so have to go and get it tomorrow (after seeing Saenchai and Mr. Thakoon) = making Liam drive for 2 hours. A task he is not getting to happy about!!
Also I might have to cancel my seminar on saturday due to lack of interest.

So today has been shi*e! And I really wanted to cuddle up with a cup of warm tea or nice latte, a ‘something sweet, wheaty, chocolaty I-feel-sorry-for-me’ kind of treat. But so far I’ve made it without. A lunch time kettlebell class in CIT saved me from drowning my worries in scones (CIT’s is by far the best I’ve had in Ireland. Only they don’t come with cream ūüėČ ), so here I am… thinking about how set backs comes and goes.

I know a few of ‘my’ FighterGirls have set backs too. Or they’re not coming to training these days – so unless they’ve found another gym/ class, they’re feeling a bit of a set back in their training. As for me – I’ve had enough set backs in my training (injuries, no gym/ trainer, more injuries) to know, that I’m getting back up and back into the swing of things after a day or a week top. But for the girls – I don’t know. I know, that the longer you stay away, the harder it can become to return.
Your body is getting lazy and you’re becoming better making excuses. Soon staying home and do nothing becomes everyday life and we as humans, often grow content with this. Telling ourselves ‘It doesn’t matter anyway. I never get fit’, ‘I can always start next monday’ or ‘I never get good anyway, so what’s the point’.
We tell ourselves these things and believe them for a while, until one day, we realize our pants shrunk too much and we either have to buy new ones or get our as* off the couch.

I have my new game ON’ these days. Flying the clean diet banner high and feeling strong! But today… gosh, what I wouldn’t do for a scone, with cream & jam!

Scones with cream & jam. Just looking at it... sigh! ;)

My new journey – week 2

A few weeks ago, I decided to try a quit drastic change in my diet, as well as I embarked on my new journey as a Strength & Conditioning coach – and trying out my own 4 weeks program.

For those of you who read my blog, and know me through real life: classes, long lost friends in Denmark, new friends and aq. in Ireland: You all probably know, I’m pretty strong and could tear down the walls, but you also know, that I haven’t been fighter fit, since my last fight (which I think is 2 years ago!!!).

Two weeks into my strength program (which I had to modify the past 3 sessions, due to a broken finger) and into my new diet, I’m starting to see peeps of abs. Which of course makes¬†everything ¬†better.

End of the second week and somethings starting to show

End of the second week and somethings starting to show and of course also showing is the broken, buddy strapped finger

I’m also starting to feel a lot stronger, especially in the Snatch, where I reckon, I’ll be upping about 10kg, once the finger is healed, and I got a strong grip again.

In the mirror, I see my arms and shoulders starting to stand out, and it’s a really delight to not only know, that I’m strong, but also to start seeing it. My new diet is btw. very simple: No Wheat or gluten products.
I’ve had a few gluten-free bread slices in between, chocolate chip cookies ditto, rice cakes, cheeses & gluten-free sausages, but otherwise everything is non-processed foods. I still do dairy – enjoying my yogurt in the morning and having lots of milk in the coffee. So I’m not joining the paleo movement, just trying to clean out a bit and see where this takes my body.

4 weeks is set off for the Strength & Conditioning program and so far, that’s also my time limit for my diet, however, I could easily see it continue. I don’t miss wheat that much, except for perhaps the occasionally danish ūüėČ

Strength and Conditioning KBTe style

This past weekend I was in Dublin for the KBTe Strength & Conditioning level I course. The course covered Weightlifting (Olympic), powerlifting and Kettlebells.

Despite I was staying next door at O’Sheas Merchant Hotel, I had a good weekend. The course was good, and even I’ve been doing Olympic weightlifting for some time, I learned some new stuff, as they broke down the lifts. When I had my first day with OL lifting, I got a broomstick in my hand and was told to practice the snatch. After about 30 min, I was promoted to the bar. Hahaha. The KBTe guys had a different approach, which was more beginner friendly to newcomers – but then, I doubt most people will try and tackly Olympic weightlifting before they know their powerlifts.

As for the hotel, I really have to say: DON’T STAY there, unless you’re having a hen or stag party – or just want to party, be drunk and awake all night. Staying there just to have a bed for the night (and stuff to do next morning) as I did, is a big! mistake. There is a live band playing from midnight to 2.30am. In my case the first night was George Michael covers (which weren’t terrible) and Tina Turner covers (which were terrible!!) last night. On top of that, you have drunk Irish men (of both sexes) running around screaming, slamming doors and trying to get into your room, because they’re so drunk, they forgot what room they’re in.
And to make matters worse: No breakfast before 9am sunday morning! Which sucks double, when you have to lift kettlebells for 3 hours before noon!
I can never recommend this place to anyone. I’m sorry!

Back to my course – last day sunday consisted of KB work, to which the guys added a compound. After every new technique, we did the compound all over again – adding reps from the new technique. I think, I saw grown men cry in the end, but I’m not sure – was busy crying myself! (It was a tough cookie! – see picture for details).

Last KB Compound of the day

Last KB Compound of the day

Anyway, it was a great weekend even the lifts were simple. (For example did they exclude the split jerk!) It was fun to be ‘in a class’ again for once!

My own training so far in 2013 consist of:
Classes
Weight training
Running
Muay Thai (unfortunately not so often as I’ve would like)

For the next 4 weeks I’m following my S & C program, which is also the last part of the assesment!
Day 1, week 1 look like this:
* Snatch 5x 5
* Squat 4x 6
* Military 3x 8
* Pull Ups 3x 8
Everything is 80% , except for pull ups. Going to do some small adjustments in weight, but kept resting times according to program (almost), so everything felt good.

Happy Valentines day

I’m still alive and kicking here in Ireland, despite the weather and the public transport system continuously trying to get me down. But I’ve been crazy busy the past few weeks. Since I started working with MiFitness and CIT, I’m often doing classes both morning and evening, and its left me really ‘to tired to blog’¬†– between everything else that’s going on.

Like this week a friend of mine from Denmark (Ninna) have visited, and it’s been good, but sure a little stressful. For her as well. I love working with MiFitness, they are really great guys (Brenda and Conor), but some days it’s tough, to not work 8 hours straight – but here and there, drizzled all out over the course of a day.

feel the burn lego

For my training, ¬†a lot of it goes on in the many¬†classes I’ve started to teach: Burn and Tone, 20:20:20, Abs Blast, Circuit and Kettlebells. For The FighterGirls and the new morning boxercise class, I don’t do much: just demonstrating and sorting kick and punches out. (No kicks in Boxercise). MiFitness embraced The FighterGirl concept, which is so cool (I really love them for this!)! The members seem to love it and I really enjoy teaching my kicks and tricks to more corkian ladies.

However due to Irish public transport or lack of the same, I am actually picking up weights again. To be on work on time, I have to get there an hour earlier: So I might as well use the gym.

Wrist, elbow and now finger all are ‘work-able’, which unfortunately doesn’t mean good. So I’m slowly picking up strength again, and trying new stuff, since the gym carries cables, leg press and hamstring curl. Btw. I love the hamstring curl!

I don’t have enough numbers, but will work on getting my blogging on again, and start posting some numbers!

Anyways, Happy Valentines day, pancake day and ash wednesday-day. For me it’s all the same: It’s GYM Day every day!! ūüėČ

When you don’t pay attention – shit happens

Yesterday was a day with a bit of stress and ‘modern world’ despair (We forgot a laptop charger in Clon), but made it into the city: On the hunt for a tip adaptor & to keep up my weight sessions.

Once again life taught me to keep my focus while doing. Had my mind somewhere else for a¬†brief moment, lost focus and grip slipped on what I was doing, and I squished my finger between the rack and a 20+ something db. Result: Blue striped sausage finger (that atleast doesn’t hurt, just being very unhandy). It’s a reminder to keep focus on what I’m doing, unfortunately it leaves me a little handicaped and keeping Muay Thai training off (again).

Anys training log down:

Monday:
Squat
10x 20kg warm up
2x 5x 30kg
2x 5x 40kg
2x 5x 45kg
2x 4x 50kg
– All ATG style. 50 felt better this week, I have a feeling if I keep at it, I be up on my 78kg (PR) soon enough. However not sure I can lift more this week with my finger, so might have yet another set back –
Goodmornings:
2x 5x 30kg
2x 5x 35kg
Deadlift
2x 5x 60kg
-Switched to a light deadlift, as could feel my lower back on the last Goodmorning. Kind of prefer Goodmornings thou, feel like they doing a better job on the hamstrings-
Pull Ups/ Chin Ups
3x 5
BoR
2x 5x 22.5Kg (that’s a guess)
-Accident happens when I was to put the DB back. Grip was so wide, so it slipped while I was awkwardly putting it back – thinking of something else. Result: Finger caught between rack and db. Could move my finger just after it happened, and it didn’t hurt overly much. Managed to go ahead for a 6kg MB for 20 deep Saxons afterwards. But later on and the day after finger swelled up and is now resembling a little bluestriped fat sausage + can’t bend it anymore due to swelling.

Sunday: Nothing
Saturday: 1 hour of Muay thai: 8 rounds on the bag, 4 rounds on pads.
discovered just how much difference there is being ‘fighter fit’ and being casually fit. Fighter fit= going 100% on the pads (and that’s not even all of it). Anyway died slowly on pads, but went for the 100%.

Got squat ?!?

Something funny happened¬†in the gym (again today). I was up in Mayfield to get a little session of my own, and while I was squatting, a huge guy came up to me and said: ‘It’s good to see women squatting’. I smiled and nodded politely, trying to reply squat is good for everybody, but he cut me off and¬†then proceeded on to say: ‘Don’t ever feel embarrassed or threatened to come to the gym, just because there’s a bunch of guys lifting weights here’ (nodding over to his friends doing bench and flys).

I’m still smiling politely and am about to mutter some reasonable reply – which are stuck, cause I’m not sure what to say. At this point, I’ve been in the gym for about 15 minutes – squatting.¬†He then mumbles something and walks away, take his bag and proceed to the exit. I just got time to squeeze out a little half ‘Thank you’.

I’m actually not sure, why I still find these moments funny – but I do.

It happened before, and it will probably happen again: Guys feeling the need to commentating a female on the free weights. I’m ok with that! Comment at me!

Wednesday (today):
Squat
10x 20kg warm up
2x 5x 30kg
2x 5x 40kg
2x 5x 45kg
4x 50kg
3x 50kg
– Getting up there. Funny first two 50 was easy – then I adjusted my stance and it felt crap. Anyway, nice to feel a little strength left, despite so many months since squatting regularly.

Front Squat:
5x 20kg
5x 25kg
2x 5x 30kg
– Quite easy, will up the weight next

Front squat super set with strict Pull / Chin ups:
5,4,3 (pull ups),5,4,3 (Chin ups)

Goodmornings:
5x 20kg
2x 5x 30kg
2x 5x 40kg
-Quite easy 40’s

Lats:
5x 30kg
5x 35kg
2x 5x 40kg
5x 45kg
– Last set hard enough

Hanging leg raises – super controlled and with pause at the top
6x 5

BoR:
2x 5x 20kg
5x 22.5kg
– Still got some strength despite elbow and wrist fuck. Both seems better, but going to push regular push ups/ dips/ bench ect. ¬†for another week. Hopefully it keep getting better – and by next week – be gone! (here’s to hoping!)

Abs & Back on swissball
5x 20

Stretching – Nice!

Tuesday:
5.7 K – normal pace
2 classes: The FighterGirl Club & Mayfield
-Despite the nice article in The Cork News¬†no new girls showed up because of that, but a few due to word of mouth. I have a feeling it might be the lack of ‘No Contact’ fighter fit training mention in the paper. It does sounds a small bit like it’s a real fighter class. Anyway, am not too bothered. I’m sure the class will take off even more than it has. It’s a great class and my girls love it – and I love getting them fighter fit! (as much as possible with just two days a week.. If it were for real.. I know.. different story!). Anyway, noticed one of my girls have started toning up, others are kicking better, getting stronger and they all doing their push ups without sticking the butt up! So proud!! (big heart inserted here).
Mayfield is busy as usual and girls here also very hardworking and enthusiastic! So thankful to do these two classes.

Monday:
5.7k 70% run

Does sport makes us better women?

Working with – in – and ‘on’ (my) sport, is very rewarding for me on many levels (otherwise I wouldn’t waste my time on it) and I’m sure it have somehow made me a better person (woman).
I watched the ‘Born for the fight’ videos on You Tube and in the third episode a gym owner explains how Muay Thai made him a better man. It made him want to take in the young poor boys of his village, teach them, train them, put them through school, feed them and give them values and discipline.

It resonated with me, that the sport which have given him so much, made him want to pass it on. As I’ve stated in many posts before, that’s why I like teaching: I want to pass on my joy – I want to ‘give back’.

Sledgehammer training (on a rare summer day)

On a more societal level, I think sport have made me a better woman:
* Having trained for all these years, I’m confident walking home alone at night-time whether in New York or Clonakilty
* I cherish working in a team, even my sport are individual: No one gets strong all alone!
* I’ve also realized, I’m stronger than I think
* I enjoy feeling my body is healthy, strong and capable (of what I might throw at it)
* Even I sometimes feel like crying while at it, I do like the feeling of pushing myself (or being pushed) to perform better and do things, I wasn’t sure I could do

I think being active in sport, does makes us better women (and men), because it teaches us to have confidence in ourselves. To take on challenges. To learn to trust others (our trainers and team mates). And it also allows us (as women) to be aggressive, strong and dominating in a world full of contradictions to what ‘a real woman’ is.

If you’re a female reader of mine – I’d love to hear what sport/ fitness/ fight sport means for you! ¬†(And if you’re a man, I’d like to know likewise. What does sport/ fitness means to you?)
